Basic InformationTo enter a challenge, post in the challenge thread, linking to both your .blend file and video submitted. Any submission must include the .blend file uploaded to Blendswap, and all videos must be uploaded to Vimeo. All material submitted must be public access. The deadline of each individual challenge is 48 hours after the sixth submission is entered and registered (registration may be affected by timezones). When six submissions have been received, a notice will be made to tell everyone that there are only 48 hours left to submit. Multiple submissions to the same challenge are allowed, but each must be completely unique! Submitting multiple variants of the same basic submission will be considered spamming and none of the submissions will be accepted. The challenges are: Strange Beasts (Conceptual difficulty: Basic. Technical difficulty: Basic, Intermediate or Advanced) Access (Conceptual difficulty: Intermediate. Technical difficulty: Intermediate) Fearful Encounter (Conceptual difficulty: Advanced. Technical difficulty: Basic) Failing Reality (Conceptual difficulty: Advanced. Technical difficulty: Advanced)
Strange BeastsConceptual difficulty: Basic Technical difficulty: Pick Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced This challenge is to design a strange beast. It must be one creature only, and it must be clearly an animal (or insect, or the like) and neither an amorphous blob nor a tool-making or cloth-wearing species. Make a 5-10 second video that shows the beast. The Basic Version: Use modelling and built-in textures only. No armatures or animation of the model, except for the 5-10 second camera movement. No composition nodes may be used. The Intermediate Version: Any modelling, textures, etc. can be used. The beast must have an armature, and the video (and .blend file) must contain an animated movement/posing of the beast. No simulators (cloth, fluids, hair/fur, etc.) may be used! No composition nodes may be used, either. The Advanced Version: As Intermediate, but two different simulators (fur, fluids for drool, cloth for flabby skin, etc.) must be used! AccessConceptual difficulty: Intermediate Technical difficulty: Intermediate Design a building with a strange and complex doorway, and animate it to open in a dazzling way. Use camera animation to take the audience through the strange doorway in a 10-20 second animation that shows off the intricacies of the doorway. The doorway can be a main entrance, part of a landing procedure for crafts, or anything else. It can even be a completely unknown function, for things that make no immediate human sense, but it must be a doorway opening of some kind! Modelling, textures and other standard tools are allowed. Armature and/or shapes can be used for the door animation, but one central bone (which need not, but may be, visible in the animation) must be set up to completely control the open/shut mechanism! No simulators may be used. Access challenge thread on Blender Artists
Fearful EncounterConceptual difficulty: Advanced Technical difficulty: Basic Make a 10-20 second animation of a person fearfully encountering a strange being or complex machine/structure. Everything visible in the animation must be made exclusively with unedited cubes! Modelling may consist ONLY of cubes! No use of Edit Mode is allowed, only grab/rotate/scale, and parenting. No textures are allowed, no shapes are allowed. Include one or more armatures that cubes are parented to (parent to bone, no deformation!). No simulators. Failing RealityConceptual difficulty: Advanced Technical difficulty: Advanced I... I saw it. The building did not collapse. It just... stopped being there... A large building is caught in a shift and its reality dissolves. Use any effects to make a 10-20 second video clip of the building losing its reality. The building is not the central issue, no special design efforts beyond looking like an actual building need go into it. It is to be a normal building, one that could exist in our 'normal' world. Depicting the loss of reality is the focus of the challenge! Failing Reality challenge thread on Blender Artists
